Evening dedicated to Service: "The Caravans of the Schools towards the Glacier" – 14/01/2026

On the evening of Wednesday, January 14, a meeting of great educational and cultural value was held, dedicated to the presentation of the results of the service "The Caravans of the Schools Towards the Glacier". The event was attended by a representation of students and teachers from the Comprehensive Institute of Via Palestro in Abbiategrasso, together with the heads of the Lombard Glaciological Service (SGL).
The initiative was born with the aim of promoting sustainability education in the Lombardy Region, bringing the youngest closer to the knowledge of the mountain and glacial environment. Particular attention was paid to the situation of strong regression of the Lombard glaciers, closely linked to ongoing climate change.
The service, carried out thanks to the contribution of the Gemelli Clubs, the Lombard Glaciological Service and the Lombardy Region, involved the second classes of the Lower Secondary School of the aforementioned Institute. The activity took place on 11 September 2025 at the Gerli-Porro Refuge, in Alpe Ventina in Chiareggio, in the province of Sondrio.
During the evening, the SGL managers illustrated the activities carried out in the field, explaining the importance of glacier monitoring. Some teachers and students then shared their direct experiences, expressing enthusiasm and appreciation for the initiative, considered highly educational.
During the evening, Nour Karam and Miriam Novotny, participants in the Rotary Youth Exchange program, finally recounted their experiences of cultural exchange, respectively in Japan and Italy, underlining the value of international comparison for the purposes of personal growth.
